So this year Frank and I ended up with no kids on July 4th. I know, this sounds sad, but what we said was, “Hooray!,” and started planning what we could do together.
As you all know, it’s hot as Hades out there though and we wanted to do something where we could be indoors or outside and that wasn’t too far away. NEW HOPE! Frank and I have been visiting New Hope, Pennsylvania on day or weekend trips since we started dating. It’s just a quick hour from our town, has wonderful restaurants, fireworks over the Delaware River on Friday nights during the summer and it’s also where Frank bought my engagement ring and where we bought our wedding rings….aaaaw…. Needless to say, New Hope holds a special place in our hearts.
There’s another key aspect of New Hope which we absolutely love…the people watching. I’m tellin ya, I think the people watching in New Hope is even better than at the airport. How can that be, you ask? Well, New Hope is a wonderful hub of acceptance. At least that’s how I view it. There are many couples, just like us, hipsters, gay couples, tattooed people, bikers, bikers with tattoos and bikers who look like couples like us. Now, when I say tattooed people, I mean really tattooed. I’m not talking about one or even two, I’m saying that on many of these people, you can barely see their skin color. Many are also pierced and some have Mohawks. Then there are the days when many are walking around in bustiers and with swords hanging from their belts. That’s when the Renaissance festivities are going on. Wenches everywhere!
It’s all a lot of fun. The tattoos are often beautiful works of art and in our experience everyone has been so friendly. I think this is one of my favorite aspects of New Hope and is what I mean when I say that it is a hub of acceptance. Wouldn’t it be great if more of the world was like this…like New Hope? If you can, you must visit someday.
Now on to the food. We visited one of our mainstay restaurants called Havanas. It has both indoor and outdoor seating, which is shaded or non-shaded, wonderful live music and the food has always been consistently delicious. Most times we order a few appetizers and share them. They have these amazing and huge onions rings. This day we decided to share one appetizer, the pot stickers, which I forgot to take a picture of. Please forgive me. I got too excited and never even thought about picking up my camera. (hanging head in shame)
I remembered to take pictures when the main courses came out though. Frank had a filet mignon with crabmeat on top and a side of black beans and I had a beautiful salad that had green apple, pecans, bacon, blue cheese, grilled chicken and an amazing lemon poppy-seed dressing. Don’t they look scrumptious? They were. We shared and all was right with the world. I do need to find a recipe for the lemon poppy-seed dressing though. Do you have one? If so, please share. I’ll be eternally grateful.
